Autism Spectrum Disorder Diagnosis

Diagnosis for ASD is made as per the DSM -V criteria.

This includes a 2-3 hour interview with parent or carer for ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised) and a 1 hour observation with the child - ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule). Both components can be done either in person or virtually, depending on the age of the child. The ADOS is usually a play session with some questions, that children usually enjoy participating in.  This is followed by a feedback session to understand the outcome. A comprehensive report with recommendations for school will follow the assessment.

The advantage of having a paediatrician involved in the diagnosis is that we can then differentiate it from other neurological or developmental conditions and also discuss any related co-morbidities and genetic syndromes. Genetic testing is also available if required or desired.

Post Diagnostic Support

Children with autism can have medical problems like gut issues, feeding difficulties (ARFID), sleep difficulties, absence seizures etc. Medical expertise with these problems can be accessed. Treatment with Melatonin etc. is available, if indicated.

There is a team available to help your child further, be it with cognitive assessments or pyschology input for anxiety and school refusal and other issues, or with swallowing difficulties or speech and language therapy.
